“Getting your tubes tied” is an everyday term for a process called tubal ligation, which someone may choose to do to stop having children. In a tubal ligation, a doctor performs surgery on a person’s fallopian “tubes”, making it impossible for an egg to travel through them and be fertilized. Tubal ligation is usually a permanent procedure, which means that once it happens it cannot be reversed.
