Having Your Tubes Tied: What Does It Mean?

“Getting your tubes tied” is an everyday term for a process called tubal ligation, which someone may choose to do to stop having children. In a tubal ligation, a doctor performs surgery on a person’s fallopian “tubes”, making it impossible for an egg to travel through them and be fertilized. Tubal ligation is usually a permanent procedure, which means that once it happens it cannot be reversed. For this reason, most people may not choose to have one until they are absolutely sure they do not want to have kids, or have any more than what they already have. [AA-019]
