Does Sex Hurt the First Time?

Having vaginal sex for the first time may hurt a bit, and there may even be a little bit of bleeding if the hymen is stretched or torn. Pain may happen because of nerves and feeling tense, or because the vagina is dry. But sex is supposed to feel good, so if you are ready for sex, then communicate, relax, and go slow. That said, before deciding to have sex, several important questions must be considered. Why am I having sex? What do I expect from having sex for the first time, and is it realistic? Do I know how to protect myself from an unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection? Do I know anyone I’d actually want to have sex with? There’s almost never a perfect way to know when you’re ready; however, talking through these sorts of questions with a parent or trusted adult is a great place to start! [AA-024]
